Lazio weather at the lakes in short

Lago del Salto and Lago del Turano lie in the province of Rieti, in the hills east of Rome. The weather there is not the weather of Rome. Winters are colder, summer days are a few degrees milder, and nights stay cool even in August. The figures on this page are climate averages for the province of Rieti for the years 1981 to 2010. They describe a typical year, not a forecast, and a given week can differ by a lot.

The averages are for the province as a whole. They do not describe the shore of one lake or the summit of a mountain such as Terminillo. Use them to choose a month, then look at a current forecast a few days before you travel. If you plan to spend the day with a guide, see our overview of day trips from Rome to the lakes and Rieti.

Best time to visit Lago del Salto

There is no single best month. It depends on what you want to do. The numbers point to a few clear choices.

Swimming and lake days: June to September

July and August are the warmest and driest months. June and September are milder, with average highs of 22.9 °C and 21.8 °C. The regional bathing-water monitoring season in 2026 ran from 1 May to 30 September. The end of that season is not a general swimming ban, but it does not mean that lifeguard cover continues. Read our guide to swimming at the lakes before you pick a spot.

Walking and hiking: May, June and September

Highs of 18.9 °C in May and 21.8 °C in September suit a day on a trail. Rain is lowest in summer, but July and August are hot for a climb. Spring and early autumn are the more comfortable choice.

Villages, castles and Rieti: spring and autumn

April, May, September and October are cool enough to walk through a village at midday. October and November bring the most rain of the year, so plan an indoor stop for those months.

Seasons at the lakes

What each part of the year feels like.

Spring, March to May

Highs climb from 10.7 °C to 18.9 °C and nights stay close to freezing in March. April is the wettest spring month at 79.6 mm. Bring a jacket and a layer for the evening.

Summer, June to August

Warm days, cool nights, and the lowest rainfall of the year. July and August have highs near 26.6 °C and 26.7 °C and lows of 15.0 °C and 15.3 °C, so an evening on a terrace by the water is comfortable.

Autumn, September to November

September is still mild at 21.8 °C. Rain increases through October (95.8 mm) and peaks in November (116.7 mm). Pack a rain jacket and check the forecast before a hike.

Winter, December to February

Highs stay near 7 or 8 °C and lows drop to around freezing or just below. Snow can lie on the higher ground. Plan for cold, short days and check road conditions in the hills.

Weather at the lakes compared with Rome

People often check the weather forecast for Rome and assume the same at the lakes. The two differ. The province of Rome averages 10.5 °C high and 3.1 °C low in January, and 29.6 °C high and 18.7 °C low in August. The province of Rieti is about 3 °C cooler in both the highs and the lows.

MonthRieti high / lowRome high / low
January7.2 / −0.3 °C10.5 / 3.1 °C
August26.7 / 15.3 °C29.6 / 18.7 °C

These are provincial averages, not readings for the city of Rome. For a day trip from Rome, take a layer, and expect the lakes to be cooler than the capital, especially in the evening. On higher ground such as Terminillo, conditions are different again. See our Terminillo guide.
