Terminillo at a glance
Terminillo is a mountain massif above the town of Rieti. Its summit, at 2,217 m, is the highest point of the Monti Reatini. People call it "Rome's mountain" (Montagna di Roma). That is a nickname, not a district of Rome: the massif lies in the province of Rieti, in the same part of Lazio as Lago del Salto and Lago del Turano.
The mountain has two seasons. In winter it is a ski area and a place for snowshoeing. In summer it is a hiking and trekking area. The lakes sit in a different valley and much lower down, so Terminillo works best as its own day out from Rieti, or as a cooler contrast to a lake day. If you would rather have a guide for the region, see our overview of day trips and guided visits around the lakes and Rieti.

Skiing at Terminillo
Terminillo is the ski area of the Rieti region. The lifts depend on snow and weather, and they are currently closed. When they run, the usual hours are 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and local deviations are possible. A winter start for 2026/27 is not guaranteed. The usual window is roughly 26 December 2026 to 14 March 2027, but that is a rough guide, not an opening promise.
Because of this, never book a ski trip on the idea that the lifts will be running. Check the current lift status the day before and again on the morning you leave. Day-ski prices for 2026/27 can change, so check the ticket office before you buy anything for a group.
If the lifts are closed, the mountain is still a winter destination. Snowshoeing needs no lift, and the slopes below the summit look very different under snow than in summer.

Our pick: e-bike at Terminillo
This is the one Terminillo product we found, a day that pairs the HYDRA museum in Marmore with an e-bike ride at Terminillo, so plan for two places.

Hiking on Terminillo in summer
The summer routes are mountain routes, not lakeside walks.
A demanding summer route climbs from Pian de' Valli through Vall'Organo and then along the Sassetelli crest. That crest is narrow and in places exposed, and it is not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights. This is the harder end of the range. It is not a family loop.
Choose the route to match the day
Start early, because mountain weather changes. Look at a current mountain forecast, not a forecast for the town of Rieti. Pack for cold wind even in summer.
Know your head for heights
The exposed sections of the Sassetelli crest are the reason to read a route description first. If you are unsure, pick a lower route or ask for local advice before you set off.
Easier walking is elsewhere
For lower trails with lake views, head to the nature reserve instead. Our hiking guide to Monte Navegna and Monte Cervia covers those routes.
Weather on Terminillo
The mountain is not the lake.
The climate figures on our Lazio weather page are averages for the whole province of Rieti. They do not describe the summit. Conditions at altitude differ from the valley, and snow can lie on the higher ground in winter. Treat the monthly table as a guide to the region, then check a mountain forecast for the day you climb or ski.
A sunny morning in Rieti says little about the ridge. If the weather looks unsettled, move the trip to another day and spend the time in town or at the lakes.
How to get to Terminillo
Rieti is the gateway, by train or by road.
From Rome to Rieti
A direct train runs between Rieti and Roma Tiburtina. One example is the early service that leaves Rieti at 6:12 a.m. and reaches Tiburtina at 7:59 a.m. (train 4256). It runs on some calendar days only, and works can change the plan, so check the timetable for your date. You can also combine Roma Tiburtina and Rieti with COTRAL buses.
From Rieti to the mountain
ASM bus line 513 runs between Rieti station and Terminillo. Check the latest timetable for departure times, fares and journey time before you plan the day around it.
By car
From Rieti you drive up along the SS 4 bis. A car gives you freedom for an early start, but check road and snow conditions in winter.
From the airports
There is no direct airport connection to Terminillo. Plan the trip in two parts, first to Rieti and then up the mountain. Our guide to getting there covers the airport legs.
