Lago del Salto beaches at a glance

The Lago del Salto beaches are lake shores, not sea beaches. Some spots are equipped with sunbeds, parasols and boat rental. Other shores are plain and nobody watches over them. The regular bathing season in 2026 runs from 1 May to 30 September.

Official water monitoring covers 9 designated bathing areas on the Salto and 10 on the Turano (season 2025). That tells you about water quality. It does not tell you whether a shore is open to the public, whether a lifeguard is on duty or whether there is a kiosk.

If you want a guided day on the water or around the lakes, compare guided day trips around Lago del Salto before you pick a beach.

Loungers, parasols, pedal boats and canoes are rented at the equipped spots on the lake. That is a type of offer, not a price list and not a promise of year-round opening. For most visitors, Fiumata or Borgo San Pietro is the easy start: an equipped spot with rental and a village next to it.

Water quality, season and safety

Is the Lago del Salto swimmable? Mostly yes in season, with these limits.

The season

The regular monitoring period in 2026 is 1 May to 30 September. After that date do not count on lifeguards or on beach operators being open.

Water quality

Two Salto beaches get extra monitoring for cyanobacteria: Spiaggia Rocca Villiana in Varco Sabino and Spiaggia Altobelli at Borgo San Pietro. That monitoring does not cover every bathing area. Check the current status of your spot on the Italian health ministry's bathing water portal before you go. Never assume that every shore is swimmable today.

Lifeguards

Do not count on a lifeguard unless the beach operator confirms one. Swim near the shore and never alone.

Water level and structures

The level of the lake changes, so a shore can look different from week to week. Stay clear of the dam, intake and outflow structures.

Local rules

Bans and rules differ by municipality. Follow the signs on site and ask the operator if you are unsure. Boat rules differ by lake as well, so do not assume either a total ban or no rules.

The Lago del Turano next door

The Lago del Turano has its own bathing areas and its own villages. Near the bridge at Castel di Tora, single and double kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and pedal-assisted boats can be rented in summer. Check prices and the season before you plan around it.

An electric excursion boat has run on the Turano since July 2025. Ask whether it runs on your day, because a fixed timetable or winter service cannot be assumed.

Read more on the Lago del Turano page and in the Castel di Tora guide.

Camping, dogs and rentals

A campsite on the Salto exists, but that does not mean you can pitch a tent on any shore. Prices and pitches are set by the campsite, and the nature reserve has its own rules. See the hiking guide for the reserve.

There is no single dog rule for the beaches. Ask each operator whether dogs are allowed, and for rentals ask about the price, the deposit and the closing day before you pay.

Lago del Salto beaches: frequently asked questions

Are there sandy beaches at Lago del Salto?

Shores vary from spot to spot, so do not expect long continuous sandy beaches. Ask the operator what the entry into the water is like.

When is the swimming season?

The regular bathing season in 2026 runs from 1 May to 30 September. Outside it, do not count on lifeguards or on open beach operators.

Can I swim anywhere on the lake?

No. Rules and bans differ by municipality, and the dam, intake and outflow structures are off limits. Follow the signs and ask locally.

Can I rent a kayak or a pedal boat?

Yes, at equipped spots such as Fiumata, and on the Turano near the bridge at Castel di Tora. Prices and opening days change, so ask on site.

Do I need a licence to fish?

Yes. The regular Type B licence in Lazio costs €29.13. Visitors living abroad can get a three-month licence from the date of payment. The table above has the exemptions.

Is this the official website of the lake or the beaches?

No. This is an independent travel guide. It is not the website of the lake municipalities, the Lazio region or the dam operator, and it is not connected to any tour operator, hotel or beach operator.
